Cruising on the High Seas and Insurance Protection When Traveling, America’s Top Insurance Lawyer, Frank N. Darras, Offers Helpful Tips
Ontario, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2012
The horrifying wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise transported left twenty-five people dead and seven staying missing and are presumed dead. Many more were injured in their scramble to get to safety and survivors lost hundreds of dollars in personal belongings. “In the wake of the crash, we must ask ourselves, what we can do to protect ourselves if a similar event happened to us while on vacation,” says Frank N. Darras, America’s top insurance lawyer.
When booking a cruise, name or look online at the contract you are required to sign before you depart. Most contracts contain clauses that wedge and restrict, the passenger’s ability to recover damages. For example, contracted may set a limit on the amount of damages you may recover, even if the cruise line operator was negligent. Unfortunately, signing this contract is a requirement if you desire to sail on the open water.
Here are simple steps to follow :
Do not bring valuables onto the ship that you cannot carry with you at all times. Invest in a small digital camera or a disposable one, rather than bringing your expensive camera.
Make sure you are insured against any risks. See what your existing insurance policies will cover on vacation, especially if you are traveling outside the United States. Consider buying go insurance to cover any additional costs.
If an accident does occur, seek legal reding immediately upon returning home. Most clauses have a set unfavorable time limits on when you can file a claim or where you can sue the cruise line.
“You should also contact your medical insurance company and ask them specific questions about your coverage on the high seas,” says Darras. “Find out if they will cover emergency expenses, such as returning you to the United States if you are seriously injured or gravely ill.”
Always ask if you’re covered on a foreign-flagged vessel. This is very important since most cruise ships, even those cruising U.S. waters, are not flagged in the U.S. If your insurance doesn’t cover you on the ship, you may elect to purchase Travel Medical Insurance.
“Travel Medical policies focus only on medical coverage and do not cover any other go expenses. The premium you pay for the insurance takes into account the length of the trip, the age of the traveler, and the amount of coverage. Be sure to ask the Traveler Medical Insurance carrier about the limitations and exclusions of the policy including pre-existing conditions, medical evacuation and where they will take you to in the event of an emergency (your choice or theirs)”, says Darras.
The Costa Concordia accident is a lesson to us all. Making sure you’re protected before leave port will allow you to relax on your cruise and avoid disaster if an accident does occur.

Check Before Buying Travel Insurance for a Strike, Coverage Might Not Be Available, Warns Squaremouth
St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) February 16, 2012
The European travel strike in Belgium and France has travelers questioning whether travel insurance will protect them if their trip is affected by the strike. According to Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance, travelers should not buy a travel insurance policy to protect them in the event their trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled because of the Belgium or French strikes. “Although many travel insurance policies can cover someone in this type of situation, once the strike has been announced, new policies will not cover anything caused by that strike,” says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth.
Although standard travel insurance coverage is no longer available for these strikes, some travelers may be able to buy a travel insurance policy with the upgrade Cancel for Any Reason benefit. In the event someone wants the option to choose whether to take their trip, Cancel for Any Reason allows someone to cancel their trip without an explanation. However, to qualify for this benefit, travelers must purchase a travel insurance policy within 14-30 days of the initial deposit payment.
“In addition to an increase in premium, travelers should not expect a full refund like standard Trip Cancellation offers,” explains Harvey. “Most travel insurance policies with Cancel for Any Reason will only reimburse up to 75 percent of the trip cost.” Global Alert, a travel insurance providers, is the exception with policies that offer a refund up to 90 percent of the trip cost.
Travelers who purchased travel insurance prior to the announcement should look in their travel insurance policy to see what coverage is available. They should look within the travel insurance certificate under the definition of trip cancellation and trip interruption for the keyword strike. Policies that specifically mention hit will usually reimburse non-refundable trip costs if airline delays concluding for a significant amount of time.
In addition, most travel insurance policies purchased prior to the strike will offer coverage for Travel Delay and Missed Connection. Travel Delay will reimburse the costs of food, lodging and local transportation during a delay, while Missed Connection will help relieve the cost to catch up to the trip. Depending on the travel insurance policy, the delay must last for anywhere from 3 to 24 hours before coverage is available.

Mel Foster Insurance Offers Tips for National Flood Safety Awareness
Davenport, IA – Quad Cities (PRWEB) March 12, 2012
Mel Foster Insurance, a local and independent insurance agency, announces that March 12-16 is National Flood Safety Awareness Week. This week is intended to highlight for individuals, families, businesses and communities the many ways floods can occur, the hazards associated with floods, and what you can do to save life and property.
Floods can happen at any time, and especially with the Mississippi River located right in the community. Floods can occur when too much rain falls or snow melts too quickly. There are simple steps individuals can take to reduce their risk of a flood.
Mel Foster Insurance offers these tips to prepare for a flood.
Develop an emergency kit that has insurance documents, medications and important items in case you need to evacuate your home. Keep drains, gutters and downspouts clear of debris. Inspect sump pumps and drains regularly to ensure proper operation. To prevent sewage backup, have a licensed plumber install an interior or exterior backflow valve. Make sure your yard’s grading (slope) directs water away from the home. If your home is located in a flood area, elevate the furnace, water heater and electrical panel.
Standard home owners insurance does not cover floods, so contact a Mel Foster Insurance agent to learn about flood insurance options or to save money on your current flood insurance.

Be Careful, Your Travel Insurance Policy Might Not Cover Cancellations Due to Egypt’s Civil Unrest, Warns Squaremouth
St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) February 09, 2012
The recent civil unrest in Egypt and Syria has travelers concerned whether travel insurance will allow them to cancel their upcoming trip. According to Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance, most policies will not offer cancellation coverage for a riot or civil unrest. “In this type of situation, the only cancellation coverage available would be a policy with Cancel for Any Reason,” explains Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. “However, if someone has already begun traveling, some policies will offer protection to evacuate them out of the country.”
“The United States warns U.S. citizens against travel to Syria and recommends that U.S. citizens in Syria depart immediately,” advises the U.S. Department of State. All official U.S. embassy personal and family have left Syria due to the violence and a deteriorating security situation.
If someone has recently booked a trip and wants the ability to choose whether they travel, Cancel for Any Reason is an upgrade benefit that allows them to cancel their trip without an explanation. Travelers will receive a refund up to 75 percent of the trip cost, however, they must purchase the travel insurance policy within 14-30 days of the initial deposit.
If someone is currently traveling in Egypt or Syria, they should check their travel insurance policy to see if Non-Medical Evacuation coverage is available. “Non-Medical Evacuation is specifically designed for this type of situation and covers the cost of transporting the traveler from a place of danger to a nearby place of safety,” explains Harvey. This benefit is available in policies provided by HCC Medical Insurance Services, IMG, MH Ross, Seven Corners, Travel Guard, Travel Insured and Travel Safe.
Travelers overseas may also be able to find coverage under the Travel Delay and Missed Connection benefits. Travel Delay will reimburse the cost of lodging, food and local transportation during the delay, while Missed Connection will reimburse the cost of catching up to the trip if the delay causes a missed departure.
Squaremouth has compiled a list of official travel insurance provider statements regarding the civil unrest in Egypt and Syria here: http://blogs.squaremouth.com/travel-advice/insurance-provider-statements-on-unrest-in-egypt-and-syria/

I’m going overseas for 2 months and need to purchase travel medical insurance. Which is better: HTH Worldwide Travel Gap or IMG Patriot International?
Best answer:
Answer by 65% water
Depends on where you’re going. Make sure the country you are going to does not cover tourists. Most countries in Europe do cover tourists. You will need to get the full details of any policy you are considering and compare the coverage line by line.
